Wedding Rings

Servicing, Adjustments

We do repairs on aged or damaged jewellery, and service it to restore to a good looking condition.

It requires an evaluation and discussion, to assess materials and time, in order to give you a price

We use optical instrumentation, like Microscope, Laser Lights, etc to view the characteristics of a stone, evaluate it and compare against given publications of gem stones by authorities.

It gives us the information, whereby we issue an Evaluation Certificate for the gemstone.

Ring Sizing

Rings are measured with a standardized Wheatsheaf measuring stick.

The reading is taken at the centre, with a tolerance of one quarter of a size. Always check if the size is centre, leading edge or trailing edge.

Please note that half-sizes are also possible.

When you want to buy a ring as a surprise, estimating the correct size is complicated at times. It is tricky to ask for the measurement, but could be taken from an unused ring.

Note that the measurement are in fractions of a millimetre.

After manufacturing and delivery to the client, we offer a re-sizing service within 14 days period, to satisfy the client, under the following conditions:

  1. Sterling Silver, plain or with gemstone settings, free-up to 1 size,

  2. 9ct, 14ct, 18ct, 22ct gold alloys (plain bands & solitaires) - free-up to 2 sizes,

  3. 9ct, 14ct, 18ct, 22ct (pave, cluster & channel set rings) - free-up to 1 size,

  4. Platinum and Palladium (plain bands & solitaires) - free-up to 2 sizes, and

  5. Platinum and Palladium (pave, cluster & channel set rings) - free-up to 1 size.

Outside the above provisions, some charges will apply.

Take note that gemstones are very sensitive to heat, when adjustment soldering is done.

Stripping from the setting, and re-setting stones to restore the jewellery, will attract additional costs. We will of course keep you informed of the situation, process and progress.

Also, if the jewellery requires additional metal (in case of enlarging / sizing-up), we will cost it and update you of the impact on the re-sizing price.

Ring Sizing Chart for South African, UK and American

Fingers size does change between seasons, and even between mornings and evenings.

The Selection Chart will assist you to determine your ring size at home, by measuring the circumference of the ring finger, using a string and ruler (or with the Ring Sizer, as used by Jewellers)

  1. Take 10 cm of string and wrap it around the base of your ring finger,

  2. Mark where the string first overlaps with a pen,

  3. Stretch the length of string out along a ruler, or measuring tape, and take down the length in millimeters,

  4. Use the ring size chart to compare your measurement to the standard ring sizes,

Take note:-

  1. Sizes go up by 0.4 millimeters every half-size, e.g. a size 3 ring is 14 mm, a size 3.5 ring is 14.4 mm.

  2. For women, the most common ring sizes are 6 (16.5 mm), 6.5 (16.9mm), and 7 (17.3 mm),

  3. For men most common sizes are 10 (19.8mm), 10.5 (20.2 mm), and 11 (20.6 mm).

Jewellery Evaluations

The evaluation of jewellery and gemstones is a specialist field, it’s therefore done by a qualified and experienced gemologist. We keep records of each evaluation, which contains pictures, descriptions and the market related price.

It is a normal requirement from insurance companies to update the evaluation of insured jewellery on a regular basis. For insurance companies we include a 10% margin to allow for possible increases of prices for imported gemstones and/or metal.

Herewith we consider the following scenarios: -

Fair Market Value (FMV)
To sell it to a Jeweller, we will recommend a market related, judged on current conditions

Probate Value
In case of selling the item(s) due to providing collateral, follow a liquidations, or deceased estates.

Where an auction will take place, the appraisals can be used as a reserve price, allowing for a buyer’s premium and auctioneers fee.

Our work is done by appointment. At the end of the evaluation, we will print and issue the appraisal report and issue to you. The evaluation is done as such: -

  1. Use professional instruments to analyze the content, and record the type, grade, characteristics and other important aspects of the item,

  2. Assess the gemstones carefully in the setting, record a full description, weigh it,

  3. Determine the material type of the setting (Eg Sterling Silver),

  4. Take picture(s) of jewellery, use it for the certificate, and file it for future reference under the Client’s name, and

  5. Issue the Appraisal Certificate to you (See the example certificate below), additional to the evaluation.

Our fee structure is as follows: -

  1. Items of jewellery set with gemstones including pearls – R540 per item

  2. Gold, silver or platinum items not set with gemstone – R250 per item

  3. Update of previous valuations done by us – R150 per item

  4. Elaborate pieces - as per quote, on site
